Number 40 of 52 Compelling Communicators: Andy Warhol

October 07, 2013

Andy Warhol gets into my compelling communicator series and not for coining the oft-quoted phrase about everyone getting their 15 minutes of fame.

He is the subject of this blog post because of his popism art project that came out in 1971... The Rolling Stones Album cover, Sticky Fingers.  The famous cover of a frontal close up of a manly crotch tightly held in by a zipper is legendary.

Here is a photo of said cover from my laundry room. Yes, I actually decorated my laundry room with old album covers. Brings back cool memories while folding towels:

Cutting through the clutter in the early 70's was not easy. The Beatles had put out their White Album in 1968. A double album with no graphics or text other than the band name embossed on the sleeve. Big Brother and the Holding company had that Cheap Thrills cartoon style enveloping its record.

Mick Jagger gave Warhol the latitude to create something unique:

Profiling a man's package like that has been the subject of much analysis. For me, it symbolized the band's freedom from a record contract that allowed them to, forgive me, show their creative muscle.

Creative expression is another tool in the arsenal of good communication. Situation appropriate, of course.

This ballsy cover, that housed one of the best stones albums ever, warranted way more than 15 minutes in the limelight.
